    you could stay for a little longer? Once the cameras and laptop are set up, Bo wants to try seeing what happens when Adrian gets angry. We need to do that, but I’ll feel a lot better if everyone’s here in the house during that test. You and Andre will know if something’s going wrong, and y’all can help us get Lee and Adrian out safe.”
    “I’ll talk to Andre, but I’m sure that won’t be a problem.” Rising on tiptoe, Cecile kissed Sam’s cheek, then pulled him into a quick hug. “Would you like me to let Bo know what I found, or would you rather do it?”
    “I’ll do it.” Sam gave her a halfhearted smile as she drew away. “Thanks, Cecile.”
“No problem.” She patted his arm. “We’ll be downstairs. One of you come down and let us know once you’ve concluded your testing, okay?” “Sure.”
    He lowered himself onto the edge of Adrian’s bed as Cecile left the room. His heart thudded hard and fast against his sternum. Knowing what he’d felt was real terrified him.
    What the hell would they do if this “test” of Bo’s let loose something they still weren’t one hundred percent sure how to fight? Bo’s head popped around the doorframe. “Sam, could you move the desk camera a little to the right?”
“Yeah.” Hopping to his feet, Sam walked to the desk and repositioned the camera.
“How’s that?”
“A little more,” Bo called from the hall, where he’d gone back to the laptop.
    Sam moved the camera a bit more, stopping when Bo gave the word. He grabbed the roll of duct tape and secured the cord in place on the desk. “Is the other camera okay?”
    “Yes, it’s perfect where it is.” Bo came through the doorway with Adrian at his side.
“Adrian, go ahead and get changed and get your teeth brushed. Then we’ll get started.”
“Okay.” Darting a quick look at Sam, Adrian opened his top dresser drawer, dug out a pair of Darth Maul pajamas and left the room. Bo turned to Sam with eyes full of curiosity and dread. “What did Cecile say?”
“She felt the same thing as I did.”
“And she agrees about what it might be?”

Sam nodded. Bo swore. “Maybe we should call off the test phase.”
    “We’ll do whatever you think is best. But Cecile said she’d talk to Andre and have the whole group stay until we’re ready to settle in for the night. That way, if anything did happen, they’d be here, and could help protect Adrian and Lee.” Bo pulled his braid over his shoulder. He wound the end around his hand, unwound it, wound it up again. “Okay. We’ll go ahead and do the test as planned. If anything is going to happen, I’d much rather it happened while we’re here and more or less prepared for it.”
    “Exactly.” Sam untangled Bo’s hand from his braid and kissed the inside of his wrist. “I think maybe having us here will temper Adrian’s emotions enough to keep anything much from happening anyway.”

    “That’s true.” Bo glanced toward the hallway, then tilted his head up and captured Sam’s mouth in a swift kiss which contained more need for comfort than anything else.

    When they pulled apart, Bo pinned Sam with a pleading stare. “Are you ready for this?” The questions Bo hadn’t asked came through loud and clear. Are you ready for what might happen tonight? Are you ready to face a monster if need be, to save my son’s life?
    Mustering as much confidence as he could, Sam nodded. “Yes.” 110
