same individuals allow stratifying the samples and testing for pleiotropic effects on multiple traits. Analysis with multiple phenotypes can refine the associations with a disorder to more subtle phenotypes providing an indication of the most relevant cognitive processes.
Language-related disorders are likely to be caused by multiple factors of both genetic and environmental origin. The identification of candidate genes for language-related disorders is an important milestone in our understanding of the underlying biology. However, the genes identified so far represent only a minor component of the complete picture. Molecular characterisation is required to properly interpret how genetic variation leads to phenotypic variation. Understanding the biological basis of the specific effects observed for the handedness association in people with dyslexia may lead to discover how handedness, cerebral asymmetries and reading abilities are linked. This relationship is expected to be highly complex but is likely to support the idea that the biological causes of dyslexia are determined earlier on in development.
