true. But everything else you said is a lie. Yes, I attacked him in a weak moment, and the fact that he’s a difficult man is only an explanation, not an excuse. But when I came here I had no intention at all of hurting him. Good heavens, I had never even heard his name before. Do you want to know why I came here, Lady Margaret? It was because of you. The moment I heard you sing in the Coliseum, I fell in love with you. You have the most beautiful voice I have ever heard, and your songs made my own pain → bearable for the first time in years. I applied to be Lord Chesterfield’s nurse only to be near you, and that’s why I gladly → put up with him. But in the past weeks everything has changed. I’ve discovered a lonely old man → aching for love, but who can only → lash out against the world. And the wonderful woman I thought you were was just an illusion. You are nothing but a selfish little girl who → loathes her father because she feels misunderstood. I came here for you, Margaret, but I stayed for your father.”
Margaret schnappte nach Luft. “Liar! Everyone knows that I love my father deeply.”
â€œYou certainly didn’t seem overly concerned about him when I came into his bedroom. You were reading a book instead”, fuhr er sie an. “And why did you ask me to accompany you to New York? Didn’t you know it would hurt your father to lose me?”
Father’s life → is at stake , and you stand here → making accusations ! We can talk about this later”, erwiderte Margaret mit merkwürdig schriller Stimme.
â€œYou mean when you’re on your way to America?”
Wieder zuckte sie zusammen. “I’m not a monster! Of course I’ll delay my departure until he has recovered.”
â€œAnd if he doesn’t, you won’t have to leave at all”, sagte Stefan bitter. “One way or the other, you’ll be rid of him.”
â€œI’ll rid her father of the both of you if you don’t stop yelling at each other this minute.”
“I’m sorry, Doctor.”
â€œI’m sorry, too, Doctor”, schloss Margaret sich an, “but you know that it was Stephen’s fault, don’t you? I told him to be quiet, but he doesn’t listen to anybody any more.” Sie gab Shaw keine Gelegenheit, etwas einzuwenden. “Lester, please take Stephen to his room and see to it that he doesn’t → interfere with Father again. I’ll deal with him when Father’s state of health allows me to leave him alone for a while.”
Get ... over here.”
â€œFather, you’re awake!” Margaret eilte hinein. “Thank God you’re awake. How do you feel? Don’t worry, you’ll be better soon. Everything will be all right, I promise”, begann sie zu plappern.
    â€œIt won’t”, flüsterte Chesterfield.
â€œOf course it will”, wiederholte Margaret, “you’ll be fine, and Stephen will do you no more harm. Once you’ve recovered ...” Sein Blick ließ sie verstummen.
    â€œLeave.”
    â€œLeave? You’re → delirious , Father. I’ll never leave your side.”
â€œI heard what ... you said, and ... what Stephen said.” “I don’t ... want you here, Margaret.”
â€œFather, what are you saying?”, fragte sie bestürzt.
â€œI want to be alone ... with Stephen.” “Go.”
â€œPlease, no! You mustn’t believe him”, flehte sie. “I’m your daughter.”
â€œI don’t know who ... who you are any more.”
    â€œI’m here, your Lordship.”
    â€œGood. Everybody ...
